The UK is famous for its seaside towns. But which are the best of the best? Find out in our guide.

The UK might be a small island but we've got miles and miles of coastline. In total, our shores stretch a whopping 7,723 miles.

This means vast beaches, towering cliffs and plenty of colourful seaside villages and towns.

These seaside towns are a distinct part of Britain's identity – and a source of happy memories for many.

But which are the best of the best? Let's explore some of the finest seaside towns and discover some great British beauty.

Southport, Merseyside

We can't talk about the UK's best seaside towns without mentioning our own.

Southport offers the whole package. Historic architecture. Quirky shops. Independent bars and eateries. Fun family activities. You name it.

Our coastal town is also home to some truly unique features. Like our Grade II-listed iron pier: the second-longest pier in the country. And our Marine Lake, an 18th-century manmade waterway surrounded by pretty landscaped gardens. And our panoramic beach, where the tide never comes in (or
so it's said).

And let's not forget Southport Pleasureland: the happiest family theme park in Britain. With dozens of rides and a host of fun activities, we're the perfect venue for a
day out with the family in Lancashire.

St Ives, Cornwall

No, we're not talking about a Mediterranean resort, but a historic town in the southwest of England.

Cornwall's St Ives has picture-postcard looks, an appealing artsy vibe and beautifully mild weather. This is thanks to Cornwall's unique climatic conditions, which often make it warmer than the rest of the UK.

If you're into seafood, art and surfing, this is the perfect location for you.

Nefyn, Gwynedd

Located in Wales, Nefyn is the place you visit if you would love nothing more than to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Nefyn is home to a small, tight-knit community. Its main attraction (apart from the delicious sense of isolation) is Morfa Beach: a sandy stretch accompanied by a pub and whitewashed cottages.

With Snowdonia just around the corner, Nefyn is a great location for keen hikers. For the rest of us, it makes for the perfect rest and relaxation retreat.

Whitby, Yorkshire

Whitby is a traditional Yorkshire fishing town… with a twist.

It's home to a dramatic coastline with soft caramel-coloured sand. It offers fantastic fish and chips and a quaint little harbour. So far, so seaside town.

However, it's also known for its 1,360-year-old ruin that inspired the novel
Dracula. And, thanks to this vampiric connection, it attracts many fans of the goth subculture.

Twice every year, Whitby becomes the UK's goth capital as thousands descend upon the town for its famous Goth Weekends.

Dungeness, Kent

Located at the southernmost point of Kent, Dungeness is a little fishing town.

It's made up of a wild landscape filled with shingle and overlooked by the Nuclear power plant.

However, don't let that put you off. It's unique in its beauty, with lighthouses, fishing boats and wooden cabins. At Dungeness, you can really blow off the cobwebs and enjoy the wildlife while exploring the great outdoors.

Tobermory, Isle of Mull

If you're familiar with British kids' TV of the early 2000s, then you'll instantly recognise Tobermory. This island town was the setting of the hit CBeebies show Balamory.

The tiny town has plenty of charms. Chief among them are its colourful buildings, which can brighten even the dullest of days. Other attractions include its large puffin population and magical malt whiskies.

There's plenty to do, from strolls along the harbourfront to boat trips where you can spot basking sharks and minke whales.

A trip to Tobermory could be the perfect couple's getaway or family vacation.

Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear

Set eight miles out of Newcastle, Tynemouth is home to three white sandy beaches, overlooked by a ruined priory a castle and a working lighthouse.

What's unique about Tynemouth, though, is how it merges artisan urban vibes with a wholesome coastal feel.

If long walks across the beach get too much, you can take your pick from a range of modern restaurants and cafes. Talk about hip!

Crosby, Merseyside

To some, Crosby looks like just another English market town. But to those familiar with its vast sandy beaches, it's the perfect escape.

Bordered by rolling sand dunes and fast-changing tides, the stretches of sandy beach go on for miles. Perfect for a leisurely walk, we think.

Crosby also has a little surprise up its sleeve: it's home to 100 cast-iron sculptures. Scattered across a two-mile stretch of beach, the sculptures are the work of Antony Gormley, who also created the famous
Angel of the North.

The artworks spend their days being revealed and submerged by the passing tides. It's a truly special sight.

Salcombe, Devon

Surrounded by majestic hills and quiet tidal beaches, Salcombe is ideal for those with larger budgets and a taste for the finer things in life.

With clusters of boutiques, cafes and restaurants, this Devonshire town is the perfect retreat for those looking to experience upmarket tourism.

Its beautiful location and natural splendour are the main attractions. But the posh eateries and fancy shopping opportunities are the icing on a very luxurious cake.

Salcombe is also home to a whole host of sandy coves and wild swimming opportunities, so it has plenty to offer nature lovers as well.

Looking for a seaside retreat that offers captivating scenery, fantastic eateries and entertainment for all the family? Then you've come to the right place!

With dozens of rides, four themed zones and a fantastically friendly atmosphere, Southport Pleasureland is the happiest family theme park in the UK.
