Chewits, the fruity, chewy sweetie, turns 50 this year. Did you know it was originally manufactured in Virginia Street, Southport where the sweet factory, latterly known as Leaf UK, was based? It’s a housing estate now but hundreds of local people remember working there and the manufacturing processes behind a tube of the popular Chewit.
The town has been getting behind the celebrations and indeed there was a reunion recently for some of the generations of staff who spent years working at the factory. Our local paper, The Southport Visiter, also ran a great Chewits news piece with a gallery of nostalgic photographs of great local interest.
As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, Chewie, the Chewitsaurus mascot, will be visiting Southport Pleasureland on Saturday 5th September and giving out packs of Chewits! So don’t forget to come along to grab a sweet or two from the roving Chewit monster!
